ALOUD is a community coalition comprised of representatives from the medical field, private industry, recreational programs, law enforcement, faith-based community, youth, families, senior citizens, youth services, government, universities and social services. More than 140 coalition members representing more than 20 different North Texas cities come together to utilize research-based, proven environmental strategies aimed at reducing the incidence and impact of underage drinking. A significant goal of the environmental strategies is to increase community awareness of the problems associated with underage drinking, decrease community tolerance of underage drinking, decrease the availability of alcohol to youth, and ultimately, decrease drinking and its consequences among young people. Therefore, we target community norms, access and availability, media messaging and policy and enforcement.

The goal of the coalition is to reduce access to alcohol by youth. We will accomplish this through increased enforcement by the Brazoria County Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force, and will provide detailed assessment of alcohol density, marketing surveys and analysis of compliance rates. We will also expand this task force into Matagorda County as part of our strategy to increase perception of risk/harm associated with underage drinking and substance abuse. The activities will include: coordination of media training for the youth, coordination of youth participation in compliance checks, and to saturate one community at a time with information. We schedule presentations for both adults and adolescents in our target area and conduct Town Hall Meetings. We strive to improve our regional needs assessment. The coalitions will mobilize epidemiological workgroups in each county to collect, analyze, and prioritize data related to substance abuse and mental health issues.

The goal of the coalition is to target underage drinking through various activities in collaboration with the local police department. Law Enforcement officers help us to achieve this goal by checking if teens coming from Mexico are under the influence of alcohol at the port of entry. By doing this we will have the ability to call parents and give them prevention measures, and if the help is needed to find the resources available for those families.
